The reason is simple once you see it. A text prompt is a description, not a lock. “A woman in her early thirties with dark hair and a black jacket” matches thousands of faces, and Kling picks a slightly different one on every generation. The moment you accept that the words cannot carry identity on their own, the problem stops being mysterious and starts being a workflow you can control.

So the shift is this. Stop asking the prompt to hold the face. Give that job to the reference system, and use the prompt for the one thing it is good at: describing what changes from shot to shot.

The Kling 3.0 consistency stack: three tools, one job

Kling 3.0 does not have a single “make it consistent” button. It has three features that only work well together. Miss one and the identity slips.

Elements 3.0 — the asset library

You create a character by uploading reference material into Elements 3.0, and that character becomes a reusable asset you can drop into any prompt, per Kling’s documentation (2026). This is the step most people skip. They upload a reference for one generation and then start from scratch for the next, which throws away the only thing that was holding the face steady.

Subject Binding — the lock

This is the switch most tutorials never mention, and it is the difference between a face that holds across cuts and a face that quietly morphs from shot to shot.

My reference setup: four images, one job each

Kling supports up to four reference images per character. I do not fill all four slots with the same front-facing headshot. Each one covers an angle the model would otherwise have to guess.

The character-lock prompt block I never change

  2. Rewriting the character description each time. If the locked block changes wording between shots, the face changes with it. Copy-paste the block, do not retype it.
  3. One reference image for everything. A single front headshot leaves the model guessing at profile and back. Fill the angle slots.
  4. Over-extending a single clip. Identity softens the longer one take runs, per AtlasCloud (2026). I keep clips short and cut between fresh generations instead of stretching one.
  5. Expecting fine details to hold. Tattoos, scars, and specific jewelry drift between renders even with binding on. If a detail has to be exact, add it in the edit or keep it out of frame rather than burning credits chasing it.
